Support Groups

Hi all, I want to establish a weekly support group in this subcategory. In addition, another member has offered to host some other topics that are related. We can start by using a video conferencing service. I want my support group to be focused on general work related topics and working towards healthy resolutions. What day of the week works best for everyone as well as time?

Asking for what you need in the Workplace

I think something that's always been hard for me is confronting issues, both in the workplace and professional, but the workplace specifically took me longer to adapt to. I used to always have a large fear that they would just fire me, and to me this was the end of the world. Believe it or not one day I would be fired (long story) and it's not the end of the world.

It's okay to reach out to HR and ask for what you need. Most of the time if you are a good worker, they will likely want to accommodate you, and if they don't, it's okay to decide to leave and seek out a space that does.

There are likely some things you will never find in certain companies, for example, in structural engineering, it's very uncommon you can work fully remote. But that doesn't mean you are limited to that space. It's hard to find balance between what we are passionate about and what workspace is best for us. But there is always hope and other options.

If you are in a bad situation with a boss, and you bring it up to HR, they will likely either
1. Say something to the boss
2. Move you into a different group (in which case they should still talk to the boss)

Depending on your state, if you are unable to do something at work or are in a harassment situation, they can be held legally accountable to take action.

Issues at work can be small or large, but if left unattended to or not taken care of they can weigh you down and affect your mental health.

I hope if nothing else this serves as a reminder that it's okay to stick up for yourself. And I hope people share their own experiences in response.

Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Amanda Dejonghe, and I have operated on both sides of creating a healthy workplace. My background is in engineering and I faced a lot of discrimination for my bipolar disorder in the workplace and I was able to take that experience and then build a community support group for people suffering from the disorder in general. I turned that into a non-profit and want to now have a separate space for people who want help handling situations involving mental health, and really health in general in the workplace. I want everyone with any background to feel welcome here and most importantly I want this to be a safe and open space where we all try to understand the perspectives of others. If in the future you guys feel weekly sessions on certain topics related to the sub-category would be desired, I have no problem either leading or just setting those up for everyone. We can also workshops working through certain issues brought up at different times. I will try and be around as much as possible to answer questions and provide support and never hesitate to reach out at any time. I look forward to building this community and hope we can all help each other grow.
