I'm from Zimbabwe, a groom has to pay Roora/lobola (Dowry) to the bride's family. Dowry is usually a mandatory gift given/paid by the bridegroom in Africa but in some countries it's the other way round.

In my country, we have what we call Pamamanhikan. Traditionally, It's where the guy's family visits the girl's family with foods or gifts and formally asks for the girl's hand for marriage. It's mostly for formal purposes and to have parent's approval as well. But nowadays, it can be switched or they don't need to do it at all. Depends on how you want it. I don't think we have dowry.
